Sambur Stool

Design a stool embracing and inspired by the design processes within the Sambur Lab and Industrial Design Program

This project was based on a student-run and student-designed maker space collaborative furniture and product design studio made up of Industrial Design and Architecture students. We collaborated with industry partners to create furniture and products.

This University of Cincinnati DAAP project is dedicated to a collaborative furniture and product design studio made up of Industrial Design and Architecture students. The studio is offered annually in the spring, and each year takes on new challenges and topics, culminating in the work’s exhibition at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, North America’s premier showcase for contemporary design. Each year students collaborate with industry partners with a footprint in the region, to create furniture and products with techniques usually reserved for the industry. My year, spring of 2020, we partnered with The 1819 Innovation Hub, Versteel, General Electric Additive Division, Cincinnati Incorporated, and The Erhart Foundry, to learn how digital processes engage traditional manufacturing in the production artifacts for “Makerspaces,” specifically the Sambur Fabrication Laboratory here within the Industrial Design Program.

Design Goals/Outcomes

-Develop and implement quantitative and qualitative design research strategies

-Apply relevant design process methodologies

-Synthesize design research and development in comprehensive presentations

-Make two and three-dimensional digital, working prototype models and micro-system designs

Swivel: Adjustable stool

  • Inspiration

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Final Directions

Final Swivel Stool

Keyshot render showing 3d metal printed using GE Additives printers, versteel will assist in the tube foot rest and metal bending the back connecter. The seat, as well as the legs, will be cnc machined and or turned. The back of the seat is also 3D printed, but this time out of two halves printed on a traditional printer, interlocked together.

Build it.

Earlier intergrations of the design have similat form languge

As the semester of 2020 continued, we excitedly developed a plan for final physical models for deliverables, but something, as you might have guessed, had to change due to the global pandemic. With the implementation of virtual learning, our team was able to pivot our energy into developing the best renders of the Sambur Lab space.

Final Renders

In context and final renders

Physical prototypes were made in hopes to continue the project to make a full-sized model for stress testing and a finished working furniture piece.
